The Joy of Sets x The Kubrick Archive
London Design Festival 2016, London College of Communication
The Joy of Sets x The Kubrick Archive was an exhibition and workshop produced in conjunction with London College of Communication (LCC) for London Design Festival. The project represented a new direction for the existing workshop (The Joy of Sets) into developing a dedicated event, working with an archive and collaborating with students to realise an exhibition.
The design process involved visiting The Kubrick Archive - on the site of LCC - focusing on researching the film 2001: A Space Odyssey as the basis for the project. 2001 was chosen in particular for both its spectacular achievements in cinematic set building and also for the incredible amount of research material produced by Kubrick, speculating on the future of space travel.
The iconic Centrifuge set was then re-imagined as a focal point for multiple references relating to design fiction as a form of prototyping: including the astronauts’ Newspad which, from 1968, pre-empted the iPad.
The installation build was a four day event during London Design Festival. Through conceptual and practical discussions, LCC students were invited to focus on making the different areas of the Centrifuge and develop a language of prototyping in real scale to re-enact the iconic 2001 environment. The resulting installation offered a new tactility to the ideas expressed in Kubrick's future-facing fiction, and began new conversations by activating the work and ideas contained within the Archive.
